Weligama and Midigama Beach
Perfect for the Beginner Surfer
Surfing on the turquoise waters of Weligama is a must when you’re in Sri Lanka. The season for the southern coast is from October – March as that is when the sea is calm and the weather is at its best since the monsoon rains have moved to the east during this time. Weligama Bay is a hot spot for surfing; the gentle waves make it an ideal location for surfing beginners. There are also surf schools scattered all along the palm-fringed beach, you can rent your surfboard from there and even get a few lessons if you’re a beginner. Most of the instructors are certified and will help you become a pro in no time! Additionally, Weligama Bay is very child-friendly; most surf schools are geared to teach young kids, they have special boards which are slightly shorter than the average surfboard and they always send an instructor into the water to be with your child as an added safety precaution.
Surfing for the More Experienced
If you’re a more experienced surfer, you should then check out Midigama beach. Only a 10-minute drive from Weligama Bay, Midigama is full of excitement. The small surf town is pulsing with energy, along with the many surf schools on Midigama beach, there are numerous beachside restaurants and bars which gives the town a laid back vibe. While you’re there you should visit Lazy Left break which is one of the best surf points that have waves which reach up to 5-6ft on a good day.
