Top 3 experiences your kids will love in Arugam bay
Arugam Bay is a small beachside town on the east coast of Sri Lanka. The gorgeous palm-fringed white sandy beaches are less crowded than the southern beaches which will allow your family to have a far more relaxing beach experience. When you’re travelling with kids it can be quite tough trying to find things to do, so here’s a list of the top 3 things you can do with kids in Arugam Bay.
Pottuvil Lagoon Safari
Pottuvil Lagoon is situated just 4km away from Arugam Bay town and it is a treasure trove for wildlife! Embark on a lagoon safari as you cruise along the emerald waters, one of the most pristine places on the island. The lagoon is encompassed by a lush green mangrove forest which is home to many exotic species of birds and monkeys. Another common sight are crocodiles basking on the bank of the lagoon or whose heads peek from the murky water, only to disappear as your boat draws closer. But the lagoon’s real secret is that it’s a great place to spot elephants as many drop by the emerald waters to cool off and frolic as the sun sets.
Surfing
Surfing is a compulsory activity for visitors to the beach town as its the one thing it’s famous for. The best season for surfing in Arugam Bay is from April to September. As its name suggests, Arugam Bay is a long bay with many little coves that provide great surfing breaks; the two most accessible being Main Point and Baby Point. These two are just off the main road and tend to get quite crowded; Baby Point is best for beginners while Main Point is a good intermediate surf break.
Don’t worry if you and your kids have no prior surfing experience as there are plenty of surf schools in the area that will make you a pro in no time! Visit these spots if you’re surfing with your kids. For more experienced surfers check out Whiskey Point, Pottuvil Point and Crocodile Rock Point.
Elephant Rock
Situated 4km away from Main Point, Elephant Rock Point is another favourite spot for surfing beginners. The rock was given its name after its resemblance to an elephant and is probably one of the least crowded beaches in Arugam Bay since it doesn’t have direct road access. Elephant Rock is set on one of the most beautiful beaches in Arugam Bay; from its peak you will see the roaring sea on one side and a murky lagoon on the other, divided by a thin strip of golden sand.
