The south waves are calling!

Catch some waves – where adventure meets paradise!

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned surfer, Sri Lanka’s south coast waves are for everyone.
The south coast beaches expand up to 200 km and will offer you some of the best surf breaks in the world.

Dating back to the early 1960s, surfing in Sri Lanka has since grown in popularity among locals and tourists alike.
The surf scene in the south picked up in 2004 when aid workers arrived in the area to support reconstruction- post Tsunami.
The very first surf school was set up in the area drawing inspiration from the already established surf hubspot at Arugam Bay on the east coast of the island.

Fast forward to present day, surfing has evolved into one of the main forms of tourism economies in the south.

Nestled among multitudinous fishing villages and small communities, lie often overlooked surf points in the south that will provide you with accommodation, equipment and beginner surf lessons.

With a focus on sustainable tourism and small-scale surf schools, you’ll find the local surf scene to be quite welcoming here. The most ideal season for surfing in this part of the island is considered to be from November to April for beginners and intermediates, however, there is a secondary season from May to October for more experienced surfers.

When to visit
Depending on the season, the crowds tend to fluctuate; however, Sri Lankan beaches remain untouched by commercialization hence still more relaxed in comparison to global surf hubs.
Therefore if you avoid peak seasons from December through February, beaches such as Weligama Bay, Hiriketiya, Ahangama, Polhena, Kabalana and Mirissa will be quieter, providing you with a more tranquil surfing experience.

With consistent swells, great water temperature and suitable waves for all skill levels, these popular surf breaks will give you a clear line-up with breathtaking views of the island.

Soul and Surf
According to a recent article published on
National Geographic – there seems to be a revolution taking place in the south in terms of surfing. A small surf school is placing emphasis on ocean literacy, mental health and community; making Ahangama the newest surfing hotspot in Asia.

The team at Soul and Surf are well versed in providing you with a toolkit of moves – drawing wave illustrations in the sand, teaching various breathing techniques, how to read the tide, how to pop up on your board when catching waves as well as surfing etiquette you will require to give right of way.
Right at the heart of Soul & Surf is to encourage every surfer to see the beauty of the sport and how you don’t have to be perfect to enjoy it. It’s about breaking the machismo and ego according to the surfing coach Jose Bernando.

This surf camp serves as a safe haven to those seeking refuge from the bustling city life. From improving your knowledge on ocean literacy to obtaining a sense of self, it is a safe space for all.
