The Best Way To Travel Around Sri Lanka With Kids

One of the main characteristics in the long list of things that makes Sri Lanka so amazing is that in spite of its small size, each region is different, from its climate, landscape and food. Because of this, you’ll probably want to fit as much in as possible, however, this can be quite challenging when you’re travelling with kids, especially young kids. This article will guide you through the different options available for travelling around Sri Lanka.

By Car

Travelling by car is definitely the most comfortable option. You can hire a vehicle and a driver to take you around. One of the benefits of this option is that you travel at your own pace, and you don’t have to worry about tickets or departure times. Also, as you make your way through the Sri Lankan countryside you can make as many (or as little) pit stops as you like- great for long rides when you want to stretch a leg or go to the loo.

Where to hire a vehicle?

It’s recommended that you hire a vehicle and a driver before you arrive in Sri Lanka. It’ll be best if your travel agent organises one for you, or simply look for popular rent-a-car services like Kings Rent a Car, Malkey Rent a Car or Casons; to name a few.

By Train

Trains are a great option when going on a long journey (eg. Colombo to Kandy). Travelling by train is a great way to see the country, this route in particular, as it winds through the country for the most part away from roads. However, one downside is that travelling by train doesn’t necessarily shorten your travel time and sometimes it’s actually faster to go by car- which can make a huge difference when travelling with young ones, but your kids are definitely in for a memorable, once-in-a-lifetime experience when travelling by train.

Where & When to get tickets?

For train journeys, it’s better to get your tickets in advance. You can either go to the station a day or two earlier to buy them, or you can purchase your tickets online by using the link below.

By Bus

Public buses run throughout the country so that is definitely another option. In terms of travel time, it lasts about as long as a car or train journey, but this may not be the most comfortable for long journeys as it tends to be quite cramped. Despite this, buses are great for short journeys within the cities and towns. There are also private buses which are smaller, air-conditioned and much more comfortable.

Where & When to get tickets?

For bus tickets, it’s not necessary to purchase beforehand and you can get them on the day of travel. If you want to buy a ticket online you can use the following link.

By Tuk-Tuk

Three-wheelers fondly referred to as tuk-tuks, named after the sound its engine makes, are found throughout the country, especially in big cities and towns. They are the equivalent of taxis and kids will love going in one since it’s open at the sides and offers a unique experience. It’s also great for exploring the city on short journeys.

Where & When to get tickets?

Tickets aren’t required for tuk-tuks, instead, just hop and tell the driver your destination. However, it’s a good idea to make sure the tuk-tuk you get into has a meter to ensure that the driver doesn’t overcharge.

By Seaplane

This is perfect for long-distance journeys. Companies such as Cinnamon Air have flights that will take you around the whole country. By flying, your travel time will be cut by half, for instance, a drive from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya takes around 4 -5 hours, but if you fly it’ll take only an hour! This is ideal if you and your family are pressed for time and it gives you a whole other perspective of the island.
