Surf Breaks
One of the things Sri Lanka is most famous for is its surfing waves, and Mirissa is certainly a great surfing location. Situated on the south coast of the island wedged between other popular beaches like Weligama and Matara, the season to visit Mirissa is from October – March; this is when the turquoise waters are at its calmest and the monsoon rains have moved further north.
Perfect for Surfers of All Levels
All along Mirissa, there are excellent surf breaks each suited for a different level of surfer, this is also what makes Mirissa such a fun group holiday destination- you can always find waves to suit you no matter whether you’re a surfing beginner or a pro. Numerous surf camps dot the golden beaches, which are lined by tall swaying palms, and they will provide you with the necessary gear, ensuring you don’t need to lug a surfboard around with you all the time!
Mind the Tide
Mirissa Beach Surf Break is the perfect surf break for beginners and intermediates, especially for those who want to get a feel of reef surfing. However, please be careful when surfing near the reef and make sure you only go there during high tide as it can be quite dangerous during low tide.
More experienced surfers will also enjoy this break as there’s a good swell up to 6ft, but they’ll also enjoy some surf points a little further away from Mirssa in the neighbouring towns like Weligama and Midigama.
