Prinz Heinrich Patch
Often regarded as one of the best beaches in the world, the 2km golden sandy strip of beach between Weligama and Mirissa is a great place to begin your beach holiday. The gorgeous beach is fringed by tall palm trees, making it look like something straight out of a postcard, in spite of this, the main attraction lies within the water. This strip of beach leads into many shallow reefs which are perfect for snorkelling and undersea rock formations teeming with marine life which are a gold mine for scuba divers! Also, an added bonus is that Weligama beach is dotted with PADI certified diving stations where you can rent your gear from for an impromptu dive.
A Stunning Marine Eco System
One of the most celebrated dive sites in Weligama is Prince Heinrich Patch, situated 30 minutes off the southern coast of Weligama Bay. Prince Heinrich Patch has a unique rock formation 20m below sea level and the dive site is home to some stunning marine life. During your dive, you will be likely to encounter some of the following: giant morays, honeycomb morays, yellow margin morays, a few manta rays and a plethora of colourful fish and coral. This is a wonderful experience that any diver would enjoy, and if you’re looking for more dive sites you should also visit Bridge Rock, another rocky formation with an underwater cave and a great place for spotting nudibranchs.
