A Birder’s Paradise

Kumana National Park is best known for being the top destination for birdwatchers! Home to more than 200 species of birds which range from both migratory species to endemic, the park is ideal for bird watching enthusiasts. The array of Sri Lanka’s feathered friends, both nesting on treetops or darting across the blue sky will keep you wide-eyed and amazed during your safari here. 

It does not stop with the birds though, as the park is home to several mammals such as the Asian Elephant, Sri Lankan Leopard and the rare Sri Lankan Sloth Bear too, making it a great place to engage in a thrilling safari excursion for nature and animal lovers. 

Boundaries, Season, and Safaris

Interestingly, the Kumana National Park was initially part of the Yala National Park, however, due to a 200-hectare mangrove called Kumana Villu, the park was given its own boundaries right next to its big brother. Come the months of May and June, and the park teems with chirps of various bird species just waiting to be spotted by the nature enthusiast.  Safaris inside the park are organised in the early hours of the morning as that is considered the best time to get a glimpse of the wildlife.
