Fun Things to Do in and around Galle with your Partner
In the Southern Province of Sri Lanka of lies a treasure trove of experiences, scattered amongst its many coastal towns and wondrous sites. There’s something for every couple to do, ensuring an unforgettable and romantic vacation.
Here are a few such activities you and your partner should definitely consider.
1. Watersport Fun
From jet ski races to fun tube rides while you both scream out in sheer excitement, Bentota River is most famous as a water sport destination. There are a variety of activities for couples to enjoy and partake in as most hotels idyllically located along the river bank have these on offer.
2. Walk Back in Time
A walk back in time will give you plenty of talking points as you explore the most ancient monuments and structures of the Galle Fort. Dating back to the 16th century, visit the eerie halls of the Groote Kerk or the quiet corridors of the National Maritime Museum. Spend the rest of the day walking along the ramparts of the fort and its cobble stoned streets.
3. Catch some Waves
For couples that love to surf, or for those that are interested in learning, Sri Lanka has a great many surf spots accessible all year round. It’s alternating weather patterns means that there’s always a surf spot relatively nearby that is open for business, and by business we mean great waves. The beaches of Ahangama, Weligama and Mirissa are popular surf locations on the southern coast. Couples interested in learning how to surf can instantly take it up thanks to the numerous surf schools in the area.
4. The Beach by the Jungle
Sandwiched between the sea and the jungle is a slice of paradise. We’re talking about Jungle Beach, a small but beautiful stretch of sand tucked between the Unawatuna and Galle beaches. Jungle Beach is situated in a bay, which makes it an excellent spot for a good swim. Getting to the beach requires a short trek through the jungle. Once you arrive at the beach, there’s a small shack serving food, cocktails, and other drinks. Conveniently, there are sunbeds set up along the beach so you could both get tans while sipping on arrack sours.
5. Visit a Snake Farm
For the truly adventurous couple, the Snake Farm in Matara would make for a jolly outing. At the farm, you will find dozens of local snakes of both venomous and non-venomous varieties. It’s operated by a father and his son, who have had decades of experience handling snakes. They breed the animals as well, so, if you’re lucky, you may get to see a hatchling. The farm also has an ayurveda clinic which treats snake bites.
