Devil Rock
Weligama and its surrounding beaches have some great shallow reefs which are guaranteed to provide some exceptional snorkelling experiences. A popular snorkelling site is Devil Rock, a small island just off the coast of Ahangama beach which is to the west of Weligama. The islet is made up of large rock boulders and a thick growth of green shrub jungle, but its main wonders lie beneath the surrounding glistening waters. Devil Rock is encircled by many small rocks which have been inundated by coral and have become a flourishing reef over time.
Snorkelling Adventures Beckon
Snorkelling here is a thrilling experience; the main rock is about a meter out from the shore, but there’s a causeway made of coral covered rocks that attract a whole host of colourful fish. There is also local folklore that says there’s an underground tunnel which connects the islet to the mainland. Even though you can’t see the supposed tunnel, the story makes this experience even more thrilling. Snorkelling around Devil Rock is an activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family; although the island is somewhat far from shore, the water around the causeway is actually quite shallow, making it well suited for young children and people who aren’t very strong swimmers. Also, an added bonus of snorkelling here is that Devil Rock is an excellent surfing point, especially for intermediate surfers.
