1. Hanthana to Galaha (Stage 1)

For those looking for a hike that is easy to reach, the trail from Hanthana to Galaha is a good choice. Starting from the cultural capital of Kandy, this trail is easily accessible by road and train. The trail begins at the historic Ceylon Tea Museum which is a must-visit and then continues through lush landscapes of Hanthana, offering stunning views of Kandy and the iconic seven peaks of the Hanthana Mountain Range.

  1. Dayagma to Horton Plains (Stage 10)

This is one of the more challenging trails of the Pekoe Trail with rewarding experiences. You begin in Dayagama, one of the most remote villages in the tea country at the far end of the Agarapatana Valley.

Very few travellers venture this far, as this is a deep tea country. From here you follow wide tea trails in an uphill hike towards Sri Lanka’s cloud forest, Horton Plains National Park where you can also visit unique attractions such as Bakers Falls, World’s End, Kirigalpotha, and Thotupola Kanda.

  1. Udaweriya to Haputale (Stage 12)

This is one of the most exhilarating stages on the Pekoe Trail, offering a rare opportunity to explore the remote and awe-inspiring Udaweriya Valley or “Hidden Valley,” a secluded gem overlooks southern Sri Lanka. The breathtaking views are undoubtedly among the finest in the tea country. It is a reasonably straightforward, scenic and enjoyable stage, which makes it one of the most popular stages of the Pekoe Trails.

This route is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, taking hikers through lush valleys, rolling tea plantations, and past the iconic Nine Arches Bridge. The panoramic views make it a must-visit for photographers and nature lovers. The combination of misty hills, colonial-era railway tracks, and the beauty of the Demodara Loop makes this stretch one of the most picturesque hikes in the country.

This is the longest stage of the Pekoe Trail, covering 21 km’s, making it one of the most challenging and rewarding hikes. You begin in Ettampitiya, a small, yet busy town deep in Sri Lanka’s tea country and gradually begin to ascend towards the busy hill town of Nuwara Eliya.
