Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary
The Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary is a secluded wetland located in Tangalle, that serves as the ideal place for bird-watching enthusiasts and nature lovers.
A Bird Watcher’s Paradise
Located approximately 30 minutes away from the town of Tangalle, the bird sanctuary comprises of saltwater lagoons, mangrove groves and plains; the perfect grounds for open-billed storks, pelicans, shorebirds, migratory ducks, to name a few. Over 150 bird species, including endemic and migratory birds, can be seen here, and binoculars are always recommended to ensure you don’t miss a single thing when you’re visiting! In addition to the birdlife, over 20 species of mammals reside within the sanctuary, and 41 types of fish and 38 species of reptiles that also reside within the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary. The sanctuary is known to be one of the oldest and most significant sanctuaries for avifauna.
An Amazing Boat Ride Tour
Travellers can enjoy a boat ride through the sanctuary, which would roughly take up to 2.5 – 3 hours in whole. Tours are recommended in the early hours of the morning for the best view and experience; as during the day, the sunrays are too harsh to enjoy a comfortable boat ride. Always ensure to carry sunblock, water to stay hydrated and wear comfortable clothing too!
