A Haven for Endangered Turtles

Turtle Bay is a wonderful snorkelling site and as its name suggests, it’s a great place to potentially spot a few turtles. There are seven species of turtles in the world, five of which can be found in Sri Lanka: the Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle, Leatherback Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, and the Olive Ridley Turtle. These turtles frequent the warm waters of the southern coast, especially along the coast between Unawatuna and Mirissa where they come ashore to nest.

The Ideal Time to Visit the Bay

While the turtle nesting period may seem like the best time to observe these creatures, the season for turtle watching is actually a little after that, between January and April. It is during these months when the eggs hatch and you will get to see hundreds of tiny turtles emerge from the golden sand and crawl their way to the ocean. It is quite poignant watching these tiny creatures make their way into the ocean and into the great unknown. Behind the beach, there is a turtle hatchery where you can learn more about the creatures’ journey and the conservation efforts of Sri Lanka’s turtle population.

Fun-filled Activity Beckons

Turtle Bay itself is a great place for snorkelling or even just for a swim. The bay is extremely picturesque with clear blue waters and a golden sandy beach which is dotted by tall coconut trees. Also, since the bay is protected by a coral reef, you can enjoy your swim without being interrupted by waves and the worry of strong currents, making it a wonderful spot for the whole family.
