Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary
The Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary is an attraction that is not to be missed when in the southern coastal town of Hambantota. Located just a few kilometres east of the city centre, the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary boasts of some of the rarer and endemic species of birds. What makes this park all the more enticing to the bird watching enthusiast is the fact that this sanctuary allows you to roam around freely, of course within a certain time limit, and follow the calls of the avifauna. Binoculars, an experienced guide and a good camera is all you need to make the excursion to the bird sanctuary a memorable one.
Diversity of Wildlife & the Season to Visit
There are more than 150 documented species of birds that dwell in the reserve, of which many of them are migratory species looking to escape the cold temperatures of Siberia, Scandinavia and Western Europe. In addition to the avifauna, there are 41 species of fish, 38 species of reptiles, and 20 species of mammals that are known to dwell in the nature reserve. It is often during the months from November to March that you could spot some of the rare species of birds and other animals within the boundaries of the wildlife reserve.
