Kumana National Park was formerly known as Yala East before it was renamed in 2006, and can be easily accessed from the eastern cities like Arugam Bay.
Why You Should Visit
If you’re looking for an alternate park from Yala National Park that’s less crowded, Kumana National Park is the best bet. Since it’s not as popular, the number of safari jeeps crowding up the park is lesser too; giving you the freedom to explore the surroundings without the ‘rush’. Only a 1 ½ hour drive from Arugam Bay, Kumana National Park is most famous for being one of the country’s leading bird-watching spots.
Home to a Kaleidoscope of Avifauna
In 1938 the Kumana Bird Sanctuary was founded within the national park, as over 255 bird species have been recorded in the park, which is also an important bird resting and breeding ground. Between April and July, tens of thousands of birds migrate to the Kumana swamp area, including rare species such as the black-necked stork and the Eurasian spoonbill. The park is also a wonderful place to see elephants and other wildlife.
